You can check out craigslist, or you can also visit furniture stores and see if they have furniture that is either being discontinued or liquidated. That way furniture stores sell items of good quality furniture for much cheaper price....

It can make the room look smaller, but really, it will depend on the size and style of the furniture. If you're looking at bulky pieces in dark wood then yes, it could seem to fill up the room more. However, if you go for a simple, contemporary style and avoid overfilling the room or using a number of large pieces, then you will fine.
